Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck Strengthens Diversity Efforts with Commitment to Mansfield Rule Pilot Program

November 13, 2017 Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is partnering with the Diversity Lab in the launch of the “Mansfield Rule” pilot program. The Mansfield Rule measures whether participating law firms and corporate legal departments have affirmatively considered women and attorneys of color—at least 30 percent of the candidate pool—for leadership and governance roles, partner promotions and lateral positions. Brownstein joins more than 40 of the nation’s leading law firms and corporate legal departments in taking this pledge. “We strive to be an innovator and leader within the legal industry and our local communities when it comes to matters of diversity,” said Adam Agron, Brownstein’s managing partner. “We respect our differences. For it is our differences that allow us to innovate, create and ultimately serve our clients more effectively. Building a more diverse firm isn’t just about reaching a certain percentage or number, rather it is about building the best possible team—and that team is one whose members don’t look the same or have the same background. In fact, a McKinsey  report on 366 public companies found companies in the top quartile for gender diversity were 15 percent more likely to outperform those companies in the bottom quartile for gender diversity. And, companies in the top quartile for ethnic diversity were 35 percent more likely to outperform those companies in the bottom quartile for ethnic diversity.” ( McKinsey Analysis) Named after Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to the practice of law in the United States, the  Mansfield Program was recently created by the Diversity Lab. It is often referred to as the next generation of the Rooney Rule, a National Football League policy that requires league teams to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operation jobs. The Mansfield Rule certification process requires law firms and corporate legal departments who commit to the program to track data related to hiring, promotions and leadership roles and submit it to the Diversity Lab who will review it to ensure that it meets or exceeds the “In Consideration” requirements 70 percent or more of the time during the review period. Law firms that successfully meet this criterion will receive Mansfield Rule Certification. For more information on the Mansfield Rule, visit the Diversity Lab  website.
