Cooley Privacy, Startups and Venture Capital – Departments of the Year

ALM’s The Recorder awards firm in 3 practice areas spanning litigation and corporate with individual honor for M&A co-chair Jamie Leigh San Francisco – September 18, 2017 – The Recorder has recognized Cooley’s privacy, venture capital and emerging companies practices as Departments of the Year. In addition, the publication named Cooley M&A co-chair Jamie Leigh a Trusted Advisor. “Our clients have the most innovative business models and depend on our team to protect them,” said Michael Rhodes, co-chair of Cooley’s privacy & data protection and internet practice groups. “While we are honored to receive this kind of acclaim, our greatest accomplishment is that we get to act for the most interesting companies around.” The Recorder’s Litigation Departments of the Year awards honor firms whose California litigators have delivered outstanding service and victories for their clients in the year’s most demanding litigation matters. The rankings are based on the most impressive victories in motions practice, at trial and on appeal, based on money at stake, the quality of the competition faced and the importance of the cases to clients and their respective industries. The Recorder noted that Cooley “knocked down a pair of tracking cases against Facebook and won a right-of-publicity case for Twitter.” Cooley’s litigation practice was recently recognized by BTI Consulting Group as a  “powerhouse” in five categories. In late 2016, The Lawyer magazine ranked Cooley as having the  fourth-largest global revenue increase in its Global Litigation 50 report. On the corporate side, The Recorder honors firms whose lawyers worked on the biggest, most complex and trendsetting deals this past year. Cooley was singled out in the VC category for representing Venrock, Upfront Ventures and Menlo Ventures in major fund closings. In emerging companies, Cooley was selected for its work with C3 IoT on its Series E financing, Quanergy Systems on its Series B and Intarcia Therapeutics on its Series EE. Jamie Leigh – one of the few women at the helm of an Am Law 50 M&A practice – was singled out for her recent work advising Uber on its recent agreement with Yandex to create a joint venture for their ride-hailing businesses in Russia and surrounding territories and for advising Medivation last year on its agreement to sell to Pfizer for $14 billion. Cooley plays a pivotal role in supporting and extending the startups and emerging company ecosystem. In August, Pitchbook ranked Cooley  the #1 VC firm in the US.
