Podcast: Cisco introduces new generation of silicon, saves power, “massively scalable speeds”

Silicon One means new opportunities for service providers and channel

Last week, Cisco unveiled its technology strategy for building a new internet. 5G, AI, 16K streaming and other advances that change the way people and enterprises communicate and share content will revolutionize the Internet. “The traffic that is moving across the Internet, is growing unabated and is actually accelerating at a non-linear fashion,” says Michael Glickman, Senior Vice President, Global Service Provider Segment. “Service providers of all types… have to figure out how they keep up with that traffic explosion and how do they put the economics in place around the building blocks of the network that will enable them to do that,” adds Glickman.

Pointing out that this challenge includes considerations such as power and costs, Glickman discusses how Cisco’s Silicon One changes the math of the Internet. In this podcast we learn how Silicon One saves money, saves power, and adds speed. Glickman notes that with carriers that have rolled out 5G, data usage among consumers has been seen to grow up to four-fold. “Give a user bandwidth, we will find a way to use it,” notes Glickman. This opens up an economics puzzle for the carriers. While lowering the drawbridge on bandwidth is popular among consumers and business customers, it must be done in a way that meets rapidly rising expectations and can still be done with sensible economics in place. Glickman argues that Silicon One radically changes those economic assumptions.

Glickman also outlines the way in which a far faster and more ubiquitous Internet will not only be the way businesses communicate but can transform core functions such as manufacturing and logistical processes. In turn, Glickman outlines dynamic new service provider opportunities in these new spaces. Glickman also sees small business opportunities, where service providers can offer a transformative set of solutions that will enables entrepreneurs to match large enterprise customer experiences and sophistication. “Get ready for it,” Glickman comments. “It’s going to have an impact on business over time.”
