Cooley Among First Law Firms to Receive Personal Data Protection Certification

Palo Alto – May 18, 2020 – Cooley is an early recipient of the ISO 27701 certification, designed by the International Organization for Standardization to help organizations protect and control personal data. The certification recognizes that Cooley’s privacy programs adhere to growing privacy demands and regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation and the California Consumer Privacy Act. To receive the new certification, Cooley completed a rigorous audit of its privacy information management system that included reviewing policies, procedures and controls around privacy controls, personal information classification, collection and processing, privacy risk management, vendor management, privacy incident response and internal auditing procedures. The ISO 27701 certification is the privacy extension of the ISO 27001 cybersecurity certification, which Cooley previously earned, for the 6th straight year. Together, the certifications demonstrate Cooley’s commitment to the privacy and security of the information entrusted to it by its clients. The International Organization for Standardization is an independent, nongovernmental organization with a membership of 164 national standards bodies. Through its members, it brings together experts to share knowledge and develop voluntary, consensus-based, market-relevant international standards that support innovation and provide solutions to global challenges.
