Website owners from all over the world host sites in the United States. In fact, the country is home to 42% of the world’s top one million sites. But website owners outside the U.S. can clearly also choose to host their site in the country where they live, what is often referred to as onshore web hosting.
To answer the question of how popular onshore web hosting is, Pingdom scanned the top 1 million websites in the world and analyzed all sites using a ccTLD (country code top-level domain.) As it turns out, website owners in Germany, South Korea, and Vietnam are the most likely to choose onshore web hosting for their sites using the country’s ccTLD.
