Pingdom investigates popularity of onshore web hosting around the world

Pingdom logoWebsite owners from all over the world host sites in the United States. In fact, the country is home to 42% of the world's top one million sites. But website owners outside the U.S. can clearly also choose to host their site in the country where they live, what is often referred to as onshore web hosting. To answer the question of how popular onshore web hosting is, Pingdom scanned the top 1 million websites in the world and analyzed all sites using a ccTLD (country code top-level domain.) As it turns out, website owners in Germany, South Korea, and Vietnam are the most likely to choose onshore web hosting for their sites using the country's ccTLD. Here are some of the main findings:
  • 97% of South Korean websites (.kr) are hosted in South Korea.
  • 93% of Vietnamese websites (.vn) are hosted in Vietnam.
  • 92% of German websites (.de) are hosted in Germany.
  • Comoros (.km), North Korea (.kp), and Swaziland (.sz) actually all have 100% of the corresponding ccTLD sites hosted in their respective country, but that's only 1, 3, and 2 sites respectively.
  • 65 countries have none of their sites hosted in their respective country, including Tuvalu (.tv) Montenegro (.me), and Cocos Islands (.cc).
  • 42% of the world’s top 1 million sites are hosted in the U.S.
  • Just over 509,000 sites in the top 1 million use a .com domain.
  • All in all, 309,129 sites split up over 230 countries were included in Pingdom’s study.
