Client Advisory: Following the Passage of its Initial Assessment Reports Deadline, the CRTC (Canadian Regulator) Focuses on Full STIR/SHAKEN Implementation by November 30, 2021

A Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) decision requires all Telecommunications Service Providers (TSPs) offering and providing telecommunications services in Canada must implement STIR/SHAKEN to authenticate and verify caller identification information for Internet Protocol (IP)-based voice calls by November 30, 2021.

To monitor STIR/SHAKEN implementation, the CRTC required all TSPs submit STIR/SHAKEN implementation readiness assessment reports by August 31, 2021 and status reports every six months starting May 31, 2022. As STIR/SHAKEN implementation evolves, the CRTC has issued decisions to remedy deficiencies. However, the CRTC has not exempted reseller TSPs, which do not own underlying network infrastructure and rely on underlying providers for STIR/SHAKEN implementation, from filing requirements.

All TSPs (including resellers), and particularly those that may have missed a filing deadline, should reach out to The CommLaw Group to ensure they are compliant and file required reports to avoid service disruptions or enforcement action.

If you have questions about CRTC STIR/SHAKEN applicability and requirements, need assistance with preparing and filing Assessment Reports or status reports, or have other CRTC compliance questions, please reach out to Ivan Zajicek at 703-714-1310 or isz@commlawgroup.com.
