Daily Journal Recognizes Three Cooley Partners on Top 100

Palo Alto – September 21, 2016 – The Daily Journal named partners Barbara Borden, Michael Rhodes and Steve Strauss to its annual Top 100 Attorneys in California list. Borden, head of Cooley’s M&A practice, is singled out for her specialty work in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. The Daily Journal notes she and her team “advised on acquisitions worth more than $20 billion over the last year,” including Cardioxyl Pharmaceuticals’ up to $2 billion sale to Bristol-Myers Squibb late last year, as well as Jazz Pharmaceutical’s $1.5 billion acquisition of Celator. In his interview with the Daily Journal, Rhodes – co-chair of Cooley’s privacy & data protection and internet practices – notes that he “lives at the intersection of law and innovation.” The publication highlights his successful defense work for Facebook “in what has been billed as the largest privacy or ‘right of publicity’ class action ever filed,” as well as his work for Google; Twitter; Niantic, the maker of breakout mobile game Pokémon GO; and King.com. Strauss, partner in Cooley’s litigation department, has “never lost a jury trial in his 35 years of practice,” writes the Daily Journal. The publication highlights his successful defense work for prominent client Kinder Morgan, which faced a federal suit filed by San Diego involving fuel contamination near Qualcomm Stadium, as well as a dispute with Union Pacific Railroad Co. over back rent and interest. Strauss, the publication notes, “credits his success in the courtroom to both his fastidious preparation and in-court skills.” About Cooley LLP Clients partner with Cooley on transformative deals, complex IP and regulatory matters, and high-stakes litigation, where innovation meets the law.
