Emily Garnett Returns to Brownstein from SEC

November 1, 2021 - Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck welcomes back Emily Garnett to its Litigation Department. Garnett returns to the firm’s Denver office as a shareholder after serving as a lead investigative attorney with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. While at the SEC, Garnett worked on cases concerning potential violations of federal securities including accounting fraud, insider trading, securities registration requirements, cryptocurrencies and fraud of investors. She will use her government experience, public policy background, litigation skills and consumer protection insights to advise firm clients on high-stakes securities enforcement and litigation matters. “It’s great to have Emily back at Brownstein. The experience she’s gained during her time with the SEC is a great addition to our Securities Litigation group and further enhances our ability to help companies and individuals navigate applicable regulations and defend them in state and federal investigations,” said Eric Burris, chair of Brownstein’s Litigation Department. Focused on providing comprehensive counsel to help clients avoid litigation through compliance strategies, Garnett advises on a wide range of state licensing requirements and federal regulatory issues. She has worked with virtual currency businesses, fin-tech companies, collection firms and hospitality companies to perform mock audits and internal investigations, conduct company trainings, design compliance protocols and consult on procedures for public and private companies. Garnett’s practice regularly brings her to federal and state courts to argue cases involving the SEC, Department of Justice and Colorado attorney general. Garnett received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois and completed her law degree at the University of Colorado Law School.
